Where is that stupid wind? Kite Surfing on Sardinia
Well here it is, lesson 1 of kite surfing: you need wind. And not just a little. Quite a bit. But also not too much. So what does that mean for end of season in South Sardinia? For me it meant I ended up with 3 out of 7 days no kite lesson at all. And in the other 4 days between 1-2 hour per day. To be honest, the shorter days were as well due to my lack of fitness :-) story of my life.
And once you have understood lesson 1, the best thing you can do is to relax. And I would say that worked quite well. Of course you are disappointed if you can't go out, especially on your last day. But it meant also a lot of time to relax on the beach, hang out in the apartment or get to know Sardinia and the little island of Sant'Antioco where we stayed.
So for the kite surfing, I am very happy. It was a lot of fun, we had great instructors and in the end I managed to ride on my own for a couple of meters. I definitely want to continue kite surfing.
But again, what brought this holiday from good to great were the people I've met. Sharing a room can be an interesting experience and again I got lucky. Marta, my Brazilian flatmate was great fun. Although we may have annoyed our surroundings from time to time with girly giggles or singing, we definitely had a good time. I only say 'Well there is a house in new Orleans' :-) And it was definitely fun to be back in a kind of student life. Living in a shared apartment with all the ups and downs of it: on the plus the great flatmates on the minus the chaos in the kitchen and running out of toilet paper (twice). With the bonus of an 80 year old lady as neighbour who would be shouting and swearing like you wouldn't expect from your grandma. In general I can say that I am a big fan of the Italian swearing, I've never heard another nationality swear so entertaining and lovely.
With two days where we knew that we couldn't kite as the wind forecast was very bad, we were very lucky that a German couple, who had also lessons at our school, let us tag along in their rental car. Despite being disappointed about the missed lessons, we had a great time with them. One day driving around our little island, enjoying the beaches, some light sightseeing and of course good food and drinks. The second day we started on an adventure, taking the ferry to the next little island and then renting our own boat to drive around the island. What a luxury. I love being out on the water, some swimming, some sun bathing and an adventure as Max was making friends with a Medusa/jelly fish. After the first scare (we didn't know what it was and how can we know that there is nothing really dangerous on Sardinia?) and with the comfort of a good old Faxe beer we relaxed again and started to enjoy the time on the boat again.
So in summary, I can recommend Sardinia and kite surfing. Both fun and you meet beautiful people. I will remember the good times in our kitchen, the bottles of red wine and a great new sport.
