Day 7: Another travel day

This might be my last post for a couple of days. Tomorrow l I’ll be starting the 4 days „Ciudad Perdida“ (lost city) trek and there seems to be bad reception in the jungle.

So here a very brief description of day 7. I had booked a 10:30 bus to Medellin (about 3,5h) and at 7pm a flight to Santa Marta. I repacked everything in the morning and made my way to the city of Jardin. Mathias joined me and we decided to take the teleferico - a little cable car that saves you half of the walk. When we found it, I was already sweaty again - thankfully Mathias helped with my luggage. The first cable car ride was full and we had to wait. That’s where I got a bit nervous, as it was still a bit 12 minutes walk to the bus. I really didn’t want to miss the bus! The ride was short and a little bit scary in that tiny cabin hanging on 2 steel ropes. Once on the side of the town I quickly said goodbye to Mathias and then hasted to the bus station. Luckily I made it and the bus trip was ok. Some beautiful views, but again 45 minutes delayed arrival in Medellin. There I had a little challenge: the soles of my hiking boots had started to come off. Not really great for starting a 4 day hike tomorrow. As it was a public holiday as well I decided to not try to find someone to repair, but took an Uber to a mall and went shoe shopping. Unfortunately the outdoor shops didn’t have what I wanted, so I ended up buying at decathlon!

After lunch I went to the airport, spent a Forelle for a lemonade and a beer, read my book and at around 8:40 made it to Santa Marta. I shared a taxi with another guy from my hostel, checked in and started packing for my hike. I had one cocktail at the rooftop bar, but quickly realized it’s already after 10. so off to bed for me now, hope to get a good nights rest before the hike. 

You hear from me again, but it might take a couple days.

 I can’t believe it. I’m on the road again. After 5 years I’m solo backpacking again. And from my first day I can say I don’t think Colombia will disappoint me. Columbia Day 2: 20.000 steps

 I completely forgot how awful a jet lag is! I was so proud that I had managed to stay up until 9pm (3am our time), but unfortunately I was bright awake at 3am again. Well, at least that helped to get up as I had planned to go with a guy from another hostel to hike up Montserrat at 7am today. So bright and early I had breakfast at the hostel and went to his hostel around the corner. But no one was there, no answer to my messages. Luckily I had met some other people at my hostel who had planned the same hike for today. So I went back to the hostel and ended up leaving around 8:30 with Heine from the Netherlands. They are everywhere those Dutchies.  We walked about 20 minutes to the starting point of the hike and I already realized then: this won’t be easy. Bogota itself is at about 2600m above sea level. Colombia Day 8-11: Ciudad Perdida

The Lost City trek, what an amazing 4 days. As usual my preparations were so-so and I didn’t really know what to expect. But I’m so glad I’ve done this trip. With 510€ for 4 days it’s not the cheapest adventure. And the hike is definitely not an easy one. But all of it so worth it. But let’s start at the beginning.   It’s Tuesday morning and I’m at Santa Marta. My tour provider is about to pick me up, but I’m still waiting for my breakfast. The guy had said that the avocado mushroom sandwich can be ready in 15 minutes. Well, those 15 minutes are over. So I ask for a to go sandwich. Sure, no problem. I just have to wait another 10 minutes. At this point I’m 5 minutes late, which really doesn’t fit to my Germanness. Finally I get my sandwich, meet my driver and am on my way to the tour operator office.
