Day 17: Hating & Enjoying the sun

Not sure what to write today. We had planned another short day as again the weather forecast was bad for the afternoon. So we hiked 4 hours to the lunch place through the beautiful Dolomites in unbearable heat/humidity. Unfortunately that brings me back to suffer and suffer like on day 1, so I don't really have proof of it (too tiredto take pictures). But we have already agreed to share pictures in the group, so I'm sure I will get them later. At the lunch place the group waited for me and then we needed to wait further 30 minutes until 12 to get something to eat. Sometimes it is stupid to be fast.
Then another one hour hike to our destination, Refugio San Sebastiano. Unfortunately they didn't get our reservation so we had to wait 30 minutes to see if they had enough space for us. Luckily Hermann and his 4 friends had never confirmed their reservation so we got their beds. In the end we didn't understand the fuzz at all as the hotel was and stayed half empty.
However, I had a great afternoon. I didn't queue for the shower, but decided to lie in a deck chair in front of the guesthouse, listen to music (I have missed the Nashville soundtrack) and enjoyed my Aperol Spritz. The sun came out, and suddenly everyone joined me and we enjoyed another drink and some icecream :-) And as you gave guessed, even though thunderstorms were predicted for the afternoon, it was great weather until the evening.
Overall a great day and again a great hut with a great owner. He took the time to talk us through the weather forecast and the route options. As there is a Klettersteig/Via Ferrata on day 22 of the book and we don't have the equipment and the experience for it, we need to go down to the valley and around the mountain at one point. The decision was difficult about where and when to descend, so on the end we didn't decide and gambled with finding a place to sleep (which can be tricky in the weekend).
The evening ended nice with a game of table Fußball, which only worked with Lira and where the girls won the final game (Wohoo).

 I can’t believe it. I’m on the road again. After 5 years I’m solo backpacking again. And from my first day I can say I don’t think Colombia will disappoint me. Columbia Day 2: 20.000 steps

 I completely forgot how awful a jet lag is! I was so proud that I had managed to stay up until 9pm (3am our time), but unfortunately I was bright awake at 3am again. Well, at least that helped to get up as I had planned to go with a guy from another hostel to hike up Montserrat at 7am today. So bright and early I had breakfast at the hostel and went to his hostel around the corner. But no one was there, no answer to my messages. Luckily I had met some other people at my hostel who had planned the same hike for today. So I went back to the hostel and ended up leaving around 8:30 with Heine from the Netherlands. They are everywhere those Dutchies.  We walked about 20 minutes to the starting point of the hike and I already realized then: this won’t be easy. Bogota itself is at about 2600m above sea level. And if you spend most of your time at or below sea level in the lovely flatlands called the Netherlands, you quite notice the impact altitude has on your body.  The climb ...

Colombia Day 8-11: Ciudad Perdida

The Lost City trek, what an amazing 4 days. As usual my preparations were so-so and I didn’t really know what to expect. But I’m so glad I’ve done this trip. With 510€ for 4 days it’s not the cheapest adventure. And the hike is definitely not an easy one. But all of it so worth it. But let’s start at the beginning.   It’s Tuesday morning and I’m at Santa Marta. My tour provider is about to pick me up, but I’m still waiting for my breakfast. The guy had said that the avocado mushroom sandwich can be ready in 15 minutes. Well, those 15 minutes are over. So I ask for a to go sandwich. Sure, no problem. I just have to wait another 10 minutes. At this point I’m 5 minutes late, which really doesn’t fit to my Germanness. Finally I get my sandwich, meet my driver and am on my way to the tour operator office.
